Beau
One of the greatest joys at Wolf Connection is when we rescue an animal and see the difference we make in their lives. Beau is one of our great success stories. He was born in 2008 and was living with a family in Tehachapi.
Teo, Madison, Jackie and Natasha made the drive on a Saturday in late July, 2010 to pick him up from his owners. They had acquired him without knowing the amount of work that it takes to own and care for a wolfdog and had realized that they just couldn’t provide him with a proper home. Fortunately they were looking for the right people to take him and found us. The Beau we met in July (pictured above on the left) was gangly and skinny, with almost no color in his coat and ribs showing. He was extremely skittish and had a hot spot in his flank and a wound that went all the way around his neck from being restrained with a chain. His owners had tied him up as a last resort because he had escaped and killed the neighbor’s chickens. As is the case with many wolfdogs, restraint was intolerable to him and he had badly injured his neck trying to escape. The upper parts of his ears were crusted from being bitten by flies. Although they knew that he needed a new home, they were very picky and had refused to give him to other interested parties who were clearly not the right fit.
Despite his poor condition, Beau was happy to meet new people and animals – it helped when he was approached quietly and gently. He willingly left with us and happily settled into his new home. The love and attention he received has made him into a new animal (picture above right). Madison took responsibility for making sure he got the long daily hikes that he was used to and formed a deep bond with him that helped his healing. Although he is still a little skittish at times and takes a while to warm up to new people, he is comforted by the warmth of his human companions and has learned to trust us to take care of him. He is loving and playful and somewhat goofy. He gets along with most of the other animals well, especially with his playmates Ayasha and Elan, although some of the older members of the pack find his constant playfulness irritating after a point. He gets along well with all of the other animals and is learning to be more outgoing to humans, as he is still somewhat timid with people, although generally content.
We are blessed with every animal that comes our way and enjoy meeting them, caring for them, forming bonds and assisting them in being great members of our pack!
